Number 1
We are one of several schools offering ASA courses in Japan using English exclusively. The Yokosuka school is for our military. The Aoki School is the largest in Japan, but primary instruction is in Japanese.
Number 2
After 6 years of experience, we have come to the reality that we are more like personal coaches. Our instruction is one on one for the most part. You end up with far more time on the tiller than you will get in traditional, group courses.
Number 3
Since we are one on one, we are not restricted to a strict time schedule. You have course time flexibility. If the weather does not cooperate, we reschedule. If the sailing allows, more content is added to your curriculum.
Number 4
Bliss’ boat is owned and maintained by the skipper. It is not a ‘fleet boat’ that is minimally equipped. Cloud 9, being privately owned, has many added pieces of equipment to make sailing more comfortable and safe.
Number 5
Bill owns the franchise and is the primary teacher (he’s retired and has lots of time).
Number 6
If you can gather a second and or third client, Bliss offers discounts. This can lower your total cost and your time at the helm.
Number 7
From corporate ASA, there are no prerequisites to ASA 101 Basic Keel Boat Sailing. Bliss does not require any prerequisite. Some schools will ‘recommend’ a pre 101 course and charge you almost the same as the 101 class itself! That is good for business, but outside the ASA standards.
Number 8
Sailing keelboats with engines in Japan requires you to have a Japanese Small Vessel Operators License. Bliss is one of four sources (and the least expensive) for learning materials to help you with this examination process.
Number 9
Although it has not been a problem to date at Bliss, some schools will put you in a group class. Be aware that with group instruction your class may be canceled if there are not enough students signed up. Also, be aware that your time on the tiller will be cut by other members of the class.
Number 10
Of course we will work with private groups and those who don't mind sailing with a group but our goal is always for you to get the most out of your sailing experience not to fill up the boat!
